455lbft at 3200 RPM and 340hp at 4200 in stock form. It pretty much falls on its face after 4200. Remove the torque management, turn up the fuel pressure, and make a few other small tweaks to the tune and it wakes up really nicely. Those numbers vary since no two trucks are the same, but another 20-30lbft and 10-20hp is pretty common. Cut out the stupid restrictor plate from inside the intake and smooth it out a bit for a few more hp/lbft but with much better throttle response and a smoother idle. The heads are very restrictive and most of the reason for the low rpm.
I am just about done with the swap. 100% bolt in and 80% plug and play. Had I found a matching year from a Suburban or Avalanche it would have been 100% for both, minus the tuning change in the pcm.

That is an 8.1, the last GM big block. It now resides in my '03 Suburban that I bought in FL last winter to replace the rotting Yukon I bought in Milwaukee a couple years ago. It replaced the 6.0 that was in it. It did the job but I don't enjoy hearing a small block turning 3200-4000 RPM running down the interstate for several hours at a time. It puts out the 380ish lbft at like 4200. My trailer and Suburban are 12K combined empty. I'm guessing 14-15k loaded for a typical trip, including food, fuel, water etc. So third gear is a necessity unless I have a tail wind on flat ground or downhill.

Oh and the fuel mileage won't be too different either. The 6.0 got me a best of 14 mpg and averaged 12 empty. 7-9 loaded. I'll get the same empty and probably a little better loaded with the big block.

The Dodge V10 is torquey but its a weird torque, that matches the weird exhaust note. Been a long time since I drove one but I distinctly remember it being a weird experience at first. I've driven a couple earlier Vipers and they are different in their own way compared to the trucks with the V10.

Drove the Suburban for the first time last night with the 8.1 under the hood. Holy crap is it a beast. For a stock engine running a stock tune with the torque management turned off, it does not disappoint. The 6.0 wasn't a slouch but left a lot to be desired in the 5500lb truck until it got spinning up to 4K rpm. I've driven plenty of 454 and small block powered trucks, plenty that have been tuned and reworked, along with lots of Camaros and Vettes with powerful engines but the torque from this 8.1 is bad ass. I foresee my stress level dropping significantly towing my camper this year.

It has dual 3"ish exhaust from the factory up to the muffler then the factory muffler spins it around and dumps it out into a 3.5" single. I put a Magnaflow cat-back on it last year which turns some of the less than 3" pipe into 3" pipe and joins them together inside the straight through muffler and out a 4" single. It's got a nice growl at idle and cruise and sounds down right mean when I lay into the go pedal. www.summitracing.com/parts/mpe-15798/overview/year/2003/make/chevrolet/model/suburban-2500
