So, here's the deal.
My 82 J10 has always had a starter that hangs a LITTLE. I attributed it to something to do with the push button starter switch that they had wired under the dash. The steering column had been used without bearings on the top for awhile and was shot, so I swapped it with a new another column that had a good switch. Still sticking.
Checked the starter, it seemed OK, but while I had it out, I switched with a known good one.. still sticking. Flexplate still looks good
The truck had a generic starter solenoid on it and some funky wiring, so I put it back to a stock configured solenoid and cleaned up the wiring, though not all the way through the harness.
Still sticking.
Turns out the BRAND NEW starter solenoid was bad; it stuck on hard core when my son was moving the truck and he did not realize it... I bumped the solenoid with a piece of wood and it stopped, but I was fearful of what the starter/flexplate might look like. I know it was a bad solenoid as a couple of times I could not shut the truck off with the key and would have to turn off the key, open the hood, bump the solenoid and it would shut off.
So, I decided to get a new starter and solenoid as I use this truck on a lot of long trips. Now the starter is getting dragged by the engine every time I start. I can tell because of the way it sounds AND if the truck is running, I can unhook both posts on the start solenoid and the starter stays hung up with the engine running.
A couple of things to consider. With the key on (not in start) the I post has 12 volts, but the Exciter post has a really nominal .06 volts... I thought MAYBE that would be enough to keep the bendix from releasing, but since I can pull both the small post and nothing happens, I am guessing this is not a factor.
The transmission was rebuilt on this from the PO... I am wondering if the engine plate is out of alignment because they did not use the locating dowels when they replaced tranny. NOw that the starter is brand new with a good drive gear, the clearance is tightened and that is causing it to hang?
Any ideas? I checked the ign switch on the column and it seems to be in good working order. I thought about adjusting it, but then when I can remove the exciter wire with no affect, I believe that negates the Ign switch and the alternator as culprits.
What it REALLY feels like now is like Chevy that is not shimmed right... seems physical now. I won't have time to check for alignment before I leave for St Louis this week which SUCKS because I pulled a trailer with a junk car in my driveway and now that and my J10 are stuck there!
Thanks for any advice you can offer,
Jesse
