So I'm mostly certain that i'm putting an LT1 in my '71. I want more power, an OD trans and 2wd. Plus MPFI is nice. The Camaro LT1 has around 300HP depending on the year, the vette engine makes 300 or more across the years they ran the LT1 and the B body engines are 260-285 depending on the year. They all run around 320-330 lbft. Running my current 360 doesn't allow me to get that combo or those numbers for the same . $500-$1000 for a complete drop out is pretty common. From my calculations I can't get there using this old AMC technology. So give me your opinions and lets leave the 'other mfg' stuff out of it and focus on the cost and end result. A hot rod Wagoneer without a transfer case and OD for minimal , lets say, $1500 ballpark. What i'm looking for; 300ish HP Auto OD MPFI 2WD

What are you going to do with the front axle?

I have this saved somewhere on my home computer, but there's a Ford Truck forum where a real popular swap is putting a Crown Victoria IFS on their trucks. It's a bolt on unit, self contained with the rack and pinion. I think (I can check this later) that the CV IFS fits on 42" frame rails, and I think I measured mine at exactly that.
They are picking up CV IFS cheap. Somebody probably has their FSJ apart enough to measure that, but I remember thinking it would be a really easy sweet way to go 2WD and IFs.
I'll look for my links when I get home. Unless you want a solid axle.

I'd love to do a lowered FSJ with IFS. One of many projects I would love to do, time & being no object.

I was looking at a Camaro sub frame that I came across while searching for an engine and trans. It got me thinking. It just bolts right up to the bottom of frame ends on them and includes the motor mounts. It is how they swap engines on them, drop it out the bottom.

Here's the thread: Crown Vic IFS into Ford truck
Looks like the original poster deleted all his pictures, don't know why. But the thread goes on forever, and there may be other threads on there that pick up where he left off. It got alot of attention. The main thing is how wide our frames are. If it's the right width, the whole thing just bolts on.

I just discovered an interesting tid bit about the LT1 engines. The F and Y body engines not only have aluminum heads and a different cam, the cam is a roller. The iron head B body LT1 is a flat tappet cam.

yeah I want the aluminum head version, i'm a bit gun shy on those. I keep coming across them for sale with "blown head gaskets" and "fresh head jobs" I can generally pick up an iron head complete combo for less and supposedly the iron heads flow better. So I could swap in a camaro/vette roller combo and have the better built engine with the same power.

So now that I have my LT1 and the 360 and such are sold it's time to plan for some necessary things.
First up, exhaust. I am planning on running full length headers. Do I put a nice 3" single in it or 2.25" duals? Cost and amount of work the 3" is the better option. A nice flowing 3" will be enough for the power I plan to get out of it. 300+ HP and around 400 LB FT. give or take of course.

2.5" duals. sounds better and mellower. heck,i'd do 3" duals.

I'm thinking the Camaro factory grind would be the better choice. It makes power from 1K-5K the next step up moves the range from 1500-5500 and that is a bit higher than I want it. I would like to cruise at 2K or less and that won't work well when the power is just starting to build especially pulling a trailer.

Update. Still in the planning stages and collecting parts I know I need or am going to use. I have the motor mounts on their way from AA. Picked up a Hobart 190 to do the metal melting. Engine gasket set, MSD fuel pump, a couple go faster goodies for the intake and throttle body and some other misc. stuff to get it together. So this is the cam i've decided to run www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam-specs/Details.aspx?csid=1101&sb=2 It's a little beefier than the factory Camaro cam and still factory PCM friendly to go along with the driveability I want. I have the Explorer 8.8 with 3.55's and a LS sitting in my back yard for a clean up and bracket/perch removal replacement. I am going spring under in the rear to drop the ass end down some. The front is the next issue to resolve. I have the XJ beam front sitting next to the 8.8 for the same treatment. I would love an IFS set up like the Mustang II stuff but for ease, cost ($1500 ballpark for MS2) and the fact that I already have it I am still going to use the beam front. I plan to do the IFS in the future but it's on hold for now. My problem is going to be getting the front down to match the rear since the front is already spring under I need to figure a way to get it lower without sacrificing ride and safety. Sticking with leafs is the cheapest and easiest so that is the route i'm taking unless it turns out to not be cost effective. GM and Dogge used some pretty flat springs on their 1/2 tons before they went coil and IFS. I'm thinking I can take them and make some bastard packs with my current main leafs and a couple from the GM/Dodge packs and get it lower. Hopefully low enough to match the rear.

Yeah I dig it. It is very fitting for the era of Wagoneer its in. Plus it's my favorite style steering wheel.

You can buy big name flat tappet cams for dirt cheap for a typical SBC. Roller seems to add a ton of no matter who makes the engine.
